It is just me or does anyone else get “stuck” packing for not only themselves but for the others in their family as well? I’m not really complaining because it gives me the opportunity to make sure we don’t pack unnecessary items or forget the necessary ones (maybe that’s the control freak in me…I don’t know?!). I also have to confess that packing for a trip isn’t my favorite thing to do, but over the years, I definitely have become more strategic about it coming up with a little packing system that helps me make sure everything we need gets packed. This has come in very handy once Addison entered the picture because let’s be honest, any new mom would probably pack their infant’s whole dresser for a short two days away on the off-chance they need that one random item.
So, whether I’m packing for a quick 48 hours away with friends or a week-long vacation with the whole family I always do these three things:
1. Stick to one outfit per day: Unless I know I’m headed to a wedding or a special event I try to only pack one outfit per day. It seems simple enough, but I cannot count how many times I’ve packed unworn t-shirts and blouses because i thought “maybe I’ll wear this”
2. Stick to the Basics: Without fail my suitcase is filled with black leggings, a comfortable t-shirt, a pair of my favorite jeans, flats or sneakers, and a jacket or long sweater that can be layered over a tank top. These few pieces can be transitioned from daytime to dinner and also make an easy and comfortable outfit for your trip to and from.
3. Separate The Smaller Items: This doesn’t always mean packing them in a separate bag, I always operate out my toiletries, makeup and jewelry from the rest of my clothes and shoes. This helps prevent messy spills, tangled jewelry and makes these items easily accessible during your trip so you can freshen up on a plane or during a quick rest stop bathroom break.
Anther thing that always makes the whole packing process so much easier is having a stylish bag for you to take along with you. These quilted bags from Vera Bradley have made me fall in love with one of my all time favorite brands all over again. They are super durable, with lots of extra compartments for all your stuff and come in so many adorable patterns. The pop of color on the inside of my black weekender bag is so fun and with so many ways to use these bags the possibilities are endless!
